These are photoshopped. I believe they're from a book called "Why Paint Cats?" by Burton Silver. There' good edits, but you can tell just by looking at most of them. Paint would make the hair cling together, and you'd never be able to get such bright colors on the darker colored cats. Sorry.

I know that these photos ARE photoshops, just look at snopes ;) However..
You could dye the hair of lighter colored cats to get hair that doesn't cling/clump.
You could paint the hair of darker colored cats to get vibrant colors, but that would clump or at least the hair would be heavier and thus not look so "perky".

I think these might be photoshopped, but if they're not then this might be the biggest waste of money I've ever seen in my life. Instead of painting your cat purple why don't you give that money to a guy working for minimum wage trying to feed his kids? That seems like a more useful way to burn money to me. At least by giving it to somebody who is in need, you're helping mankind and possibly changing somebodys life. What a waste.

No. A lot of them aren't photoshopped. Don't be douche bags, and LOOK UP the BOOK. "Why Paint Cats?". They're dyes, and there are a lot of special techniques to dye the cats. Geeze.

Yes, Chris is right. This is an awful thing to do to a cat - even if it's just Photoshop.
IF anyone actually used dyes on real cats, this very sad to see. Cats are sensitive animals, do not like strange smells on their fur, not to mention the fact that even "non-toxic" dyes may be very harmful.

1. For Candace - I think you should spend YOUR money on baseball cards. Go out today and buy at least $500 worth of baseball cards. Any kind, it doesn't matter, just buy them. If you refuse, then I'd hope you NEVER try to tell other people what to do with THEIR money.
2. I hope they're photoshops as well...if you're the kind of person who does this to an animal, you don't deserve an animal. They're living, breathing animals, not fashion accessories.

Sorry, these guys are real. Read the Why Paint Cats? book. They're done with vegetable dyes hair by hair. The book goes into a lot of the ethical issues with painting cats, and is really very good. I'm not taking a stand one way or another. Just read the book.

Wow, guys. Really?
The entire book "Why Paint Cats?" is a satire.
Whichever pictures from here that are in that book are photoshopped. I can't say anything about the other ones, because there might be people out there crazy enough to paint their cats.

No cat is that relaxed that it would allow you to paint such straight lines on it's fur... get a brush, dip it in water, get your cat and pretend to paint it. It should be quite obvious then that it can't be done.

some of these pics are obviously photoshopped. i've seen the piano one before without any markings on it and you can tell that the moustache one was photoshopped onto the guy as well as the cat. that fish one also just looks wrong. but i think some may be real. just think how people dye their poodles... if they can dye a poodle it can't be much more difficult to dye a cat. if it's used to being dyed it's not going to be bothered really... if you have a grown cat and approach it with a wet brush for the first time in its life though it's not going to be very happy about it!

Wether all of these are shopped or not (and some are obviously shopped) people have been dying pets with veggie dyes for years with no harmful effects.
Aside from that argument that's going, some of these are really beautiful to look at. I'd never mess with my cat, but that's because her personality isn't suited to a lot of things. My old cat used to love going for car rides.

Its jsut like dying your hair, the fur does not cling together. They use a special brush while doing it to keep it form clotting.
